More details for the upcoming Mercedes-AMG hypercar have been unveiled, including confirmation of its 1,000 bhp F1-spec V6 engine.

  • Based on Mercedes’s current W08 Formula 1 car
  • Powered by 750 bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 F1-spec engine
  • Joined by 250 bhp worth of electric motors
  • Total of 275 to be made at £1.9 million each

Back in March Mercedes’ high performance division Mercedes-AMG gave the motoring world a huge piece of exciting news by announcing an all-new production sports car that was heavily based on their current W08 Formula 1 car. The car – currently codenamed Project ONE – will act as a competitor to the Aston Martin/Red Bull Racing F1 hypercar known as the Valkyrie.

The Project One has been described by Mercedes-AMG as ‘Formula 1 for the road’. Now that’s all well and good from a marketing perspective, but is it actually that extreme? Well, if its drivetrain is anything to go by then the answer is a resounding yes. The Project One will come with a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 that’s been engineered the exact same as their current F1 engine, and will produce around 750 bhp.

The Project One is undoubtedly going to be a game changer, and I can’t wait to see what the final production version looks like – both in pictures, and on the road!

That isn’t all the power available either as, much like F1 cars, the Project One will come with electric motors to push it even further. Four tactically placed lithium-ion-powered electric motors will combine to add an extra 250 bhp to the car, giving it a ridiculous total of around 1,000 bhp that revs all the way up to 11,000 rpm.

Only 275 Project One’s will be made, each fetching a eye-watering price tag of around $2.45 million (£1.9 million). Mercedes aren’t shy of potential customers either, as the car has had over 1,000 people declare their interesting in buying it.

My thoughts

Mercedes-AMG are definitely pushing the boundaries with the Project One car – even claiming that it’ll have better traction than their actual F1 car due to not having to follow the rules and regulations of the sport – and this does nothing but excite the car community even further.

The Project One is undoubtedly going to be a game changer, and I can’t wait to see what the final production version looks like – both in pictures, and on the road!
