A concept version of BMW’s upcoming 8 Series has been revealed at the classic and vintage car competition Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy.
- Based on new flagship 2+2 grand tourer coupe
- Sports futuristic yet resembling styling
- Production models could include 825, 830, 835, 845 and 850
- Production version due to arrive in 2018
After nearly 20 years since the end of its production, BMW recently revealed that the 8 Series is going to be making a comeback. Originally when the 2-door grand tourer launched in 1989, it didn’t have the most successful run; in the 10 years it was available, only 30,621 units sold. The market has since changed however, and BMW are looking to capitalise on the success of their competitor Mercedes’s S-Class Coupe.
Introducing the BMW Concept 8 Series, the first taste of the German manufacturers new flagship 2+2 coupe. Whilst it may only be a concept at this stage, the production version 8 Series probably won’t look too dissimilar when it arrives next year. Its long, rakish shape will be perhaps the most resembling feature, coupled with BMW’s iconic styling cues including the famous kidney grille and Hofmeister kink.
I’m really excited for the 8 Series, I think BMW are about to make something really special – especially with their M Division M8!
Inside the Concept 8 Series you’ll find a super futuristic and luxury cabin which really gives us a glimpse into where car interiors might be somewhere down the line. Naturally it’s a bit too advanced for the tastebuds of the current era, but BMW say it represents the modern luxury that the new 8 Series will come with, plus the wide range of tech it’ll support.
The only thing this concept doesn’t show off is the engine, although trademark registrations suggest that the new 8 Series will arrive with the same lineup as its sister models, such as the 825, 830, 835, 845 and 850. There’s even likely to be a full-blooded M8 after it was spotted a few months ago. For now, let’s enjoy the concept for what it is, and look forward to learning more as 2018 approaches.
I know the 8 Series didn’t sell too well, but I thought it was a brilliant car that was simply born in the wrong era. Times have changed now though, and BMW are really going to have to bring something special to topple Mercedes’s stunning S-Class coupe.
Still, if this Concept 8 Series is anything to go by, it should make for a quality battle. I’m really excited for the 8 Series, I think BMW are about to make something really special – especially with their M Division M8!
